Factors that control MDF results
| Factor | What to specify | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Density, thickness, coating and sheet size | Test on comparable MDF |
| Tooling | Diameter, flute, compression/up/down-cut strategy | Tool list and finished edge photos |
| Workholding | Part size, vacuum zones, pump and spoilboard | Full nested-sheet cutting video |
| Dust extraction | Port, airflow requirement and factory system | Visible chip/dust removal during test |
| Cut strategy | Passes, depth, lead-in and tabs/skin where used | Program and cycle summary |
| Finish | Chip-out, fuzz, dimensional tolerance and sanding allowance | Measured sample parts |
Representative test piece
- Include a large cabinet side and at least one small vacuum-sensitive part.
- Use the actual MDF thickness and surface finish.
- Include pockets, grooves and through-cuts from real production.
- Measure dimensions and inspect both faces and edges.
- Record tooling, feed, spindle speed and total cycle separately.
Model route
Evaluate YMK-I when varied tools are required, YMK-IV when four prepared tools cover the process, or YMK-VS when vertical drilling should be included in the cutting stage. Final suitability must be proven on the current configuration.
Request an MDF cutting test
Send panel size, material, required operations, target output, voltage and destination country.
MDF cutting CNC router questions
Which router bit is used for MDF cutting?
Compression, up-cut or down-cut tools may be used depending on coating, thickness, finish and chip evacuation. The tooling supplier should match the cutter to the actual board.
Does MDF cutting require a vacuum table?
Vacuum hold-down is common for nested sheets. Pump capacity, table zones, spoilboard sealing and the area of the smallest part all affect holding performance.
Why does MDF burn or leave a rough edge?
Common causes include a blunt or unsuitable cutter, incorrect chip load, excessive heat, poor extraction, tool runout or movement of the panel.
Can the same router cut melamine-faced panels?
Often yes, but coated panels need tooling and parameters that control face chipping. Test both surfaces and the actual laminate before approval.
